Conduct and values policy as at April 2025
Professionals who are contracted, or collaborated with on my criminal proceeds teams are respectfully requested to familiarise themselves with my practice values and conduct policy. If you have not received a copy upon referral or engagement, a copy is available and accessible for you. Please email [email protected]
From April 2025, all newly engaged clients will receive a copy of this policy with their proposal for engagement, so all clients are aware of my team expectations and their options when they are dissatisfied with particular team members. The nature of the majority of my clientele is that many of them come from worlds where they have their own 'code of conduct' and professional expectations. Proceeds litigants in Australia and New Zealand are increasingly well educated on proceeds of crime regimes in both countries, including their options for legal representatives in New Zealand and Australia. It is a motivated, discerning, and (at times) a well resourced client group. Respect, trust, and confidence is earned, it is not often given to you because you are titled or senior.
Please note the value statement extract from my Conduct and Values Policy (April 2025) below:
Value statement
"I am committed to practicing in a modern, progressive, and client focused manner. I am not afraid to rock the boat and to attempt to strike new paths in criminal proceeds and public law matters. I expect the barristers I work with to be brave and courageous. This practice views itself as an example to new and old lawyers of a different way to present law and professional practice. I want people around me to bring their whole self to work. I want to be surrounded by people who behave and practice in a way that is consistent with JM and my clients. Clients are the centre of my practice. JM believes in the use of social media as a catalyst and tool for access to justice initiatives and legal marketing. Neurodivergence is valued as the super power it is."
"I have a particular ‘brand’ in the criminal proceeds market. My approach to criminal proceeds is seen in my practice social media and in the way I conduct litigation. My strategies in criminal proceeds are unique and unpredictable. JM is comfortable with risk. JM takes an active and innovative approach to this defence and is unafraid to be the first to attempt to do something. JM is comfortable with test litigation."
If your approach to criminal proceeds is not consistent with and/or does not harmonise with my value statement, you are unlikely to be a 'fit' with my clientele and me. You are on notice at the outset.
